Welcome to Carpe Web
Bring on the Soop!
Carpe Web is converting to SoopPortal software. This will bring great improvements in site capabilities. The forum discussions will be easier to navigate and maintain, and we will create new sections for the essays, humor, link directories, etc.
During the conversion, you may have difficulty finding things on the site. Carpe Web apologizes and asks for your patience.
...
The Carpe Web mission is to seize the web for publishing content. In the spirit of the web, Carpe Web will attempt to create a virtual think tank and develop a capitalist, open-source approach to content. Along the way, Carpe Web will attempt to offer original and interesting content (open source of course), including:
Please bear with us on some of the page layouts; we're tweaking the design and implementation to make it easier to integrate open-source code, and not all pages have been updated. So, you'll see some inconsistencies on the pure content pages. Sorry for the inconvenience.
News
Carpe Web has added Discussion Groups (See Forums). Naturally, the forum functionality is open-source, courtesy of Snitz Forums. Right now, these are more of a "lab" than an integrated component of the site. Integration has proved challenging, at least in part due to the original use of html tables to control the layout of pages. The redesign in mid-2003 eliminated most but not all tables and introduced CSS as a primary tool for managing the site design. However, some of the layout still relies on tables, and these are difficult to integrate seamlessly with the Snitz code. Thus, you'll see some slightly funky layout changes when you browse the Forums.
I welcome you to register for the Forums, with the caveat that I'm not quite sure how I will integrate additional site features with the user id and password for the forums. This is one of the challenges of using open source applications. However, our crack research staff (me, in yet another segment of my spare time) is already investigating how to ensure that Forum user id and password will enable login to any future site functionality.
Carpe Web priorities remain roughly the same, with the notable addition of the new # 3 priority:
- write an occasional essay on current events or review of current op-ed articles
- post humor sent to me by readers, without attribution (remember, open source!)
- add open-source functionality
- review innovative web sites
Carpe Web will take advantage of open-source software to provide visitors with a personalized experience and other features typically expected of a portal site. To do this, Carpe Web will need to find "best of breed" free software capable of delivering site and web search functionality, overall content management and syndicated content acquisition, as well as threaded and moderated forum discussions.
